A horizontal drive wheel is not just another element of the running gear. It is the interface point between steering, load, and the long-term durability of material handling equipment. We have seen what happens when the choice is wrong — even on pallet trucks from the BT or STILL series, unstable cornering begins, the rim wears rapidly, and the bearing fails prematurely. In 9 out of 10 cases, the root cause is not a defective part, but a mismatch between geometry, material, and operating conditions.

How to Choose a Horizontal Drive Wheel: Three Parameters You Cannot Ignore

Force Direction — Lateral Load, Not Vertical Mass

The first parameter is force direction. A horizontal drive wheel absorbs lateral load during cornering, not the vertical weight of the load. Its job is to hold the axle in the designated plane, compensating for displacement caused by centrifugal and inertial forces. This is why not only diameter and width matter, but also the axle inclination angle, mounting rigidity, and the shape of the mounting flange.

Tread Material — Why Polyurethane, Not Rubber

The second parameter is tread material. Rubber is not suitable here: it cannot withstand cyclic lateral shear. Polyurethane is the only material that combines high elasticity, wear resistance, and stable shear modulus. We have test data: under identical conditions, polyurethane wheels of type 350×106-30 BT drive wheel retain their shape 47% longer than EPDM-based equivalents.

Hub Design — Reinforced Bearing Assembly

The third parameter is hub design. A horizontal drive wheel requires a reinforced bearing assembly with double sealing and preload. Standard solutions often develop play after just 3–4 months of active operation. We use only sealed C3-class roller bearings with an increased dynamic load rating margin — this has been proven at logistics complexes in Yekaterinburg and Minsk.

Installation: Where Installers Most Often Go Wrong

The most common mistake is installing without checking the perpendicularity of the rotation axis to the guide plane. Even a deviation of 0.5° leads to one-sided tread wear and vibration at speeds above 3 km/h.

We recommend the following procedure:

  1. Secure the wheel to the frame with a gap of 0.1–0.15 mm between the hub and the bearing surface
  2. Check the parallelism of all drive wheel axles using a laser level (tolerance ±0.2 mm per 1 m)
  3. Tighten the fasteners only after the full set has been aligned — otherwise, misalignment will occur
  4. Verify free rotation without binding: when rotated by hand, the feel should be one of "smooth weight," not "light spin"

At the Yalide factory in Tuojiang, we perform final assembly of each drive wheel set under the control of a coordinate measuring machine. This eliminates discrepancies during on-site installation.

Maintenance: Why Service Life Can Differ by a Factor of Three

A horizontal drive wheel does not live by the calendar — it lives by cycles. One cycle is a full 360° turn under load. In warehouse operations with frequent maneuvers (more than 120 turns per hour), service life is halved compared to linear travel.

Key factors that shorten service life:

  • Presence of abrasive dust (especially from concrete floors) — requires weekly cleaning of tread grooves
  • Operation at temperatures below –15 °C without an adapted polyurethane compound — the material loses elasticity
  • Joint operation with unbalanced support wheels — generates parasitic lateral load

Our products undergo testing in a climate chamber from –40 to +80 °C. Wheels for CROWN and ATLET feature a modified polyurethane composition with a higher content of elastomeric units — this is backed by 78 company patents, including 10 invention patents.

Yongzhou Yalide Technology: When You Need a Rethink, Not a Replacement

If you are experiencing repeated horizontal drive wheel failures, this is a signal not to order another batch, but to analyze the system. We do not just sell parts. We provide a free technical audit: we measure load profiles, analyze travel trajectories, and model stress states in a CAE environment.

Our engineers from Dongguan work directly with clients — from initial consultation to delivery of a certified batch. Products comply with UL, CSA, CE, and CCC. Production facilities in Yongzhou and Hanoi ensure stable supply to Eurasian countries without dependence on logistics disruptions.

A horizontal drive wheel is not a point of failure. It is a point of control. And the choice made here determines not only equipment reliability, but the total cost of equipment ownership for the next 3–5 years.
